Early Beautiful City Tour
An interesting historical note about the city of Vancouver is that the city is actually rather old and has deep historical roots. The city was founded in the year 1886 and is the largest city in the province of British Columbia. Much of the buildings in the city however are relatively modern due to the Great Vancouver Fire that occurred the same year the town officially became a city, burning down all but two buildings in the city. Since the rebuilding of the city Vancouver has thrived and is a bustling modern city. Weather in Vancouver BC
Hiking routes crisscross the area in the summer, leading you through lush forests and open meadows. In the winter, the mountain changes into a snowy wonderland, inviting skiers and snowboarders of all skills. The mountainside is also home to local species, such as the adorable grizzly bears at the Grouse Mountain Refuge for Endangered species, which adds an extra layer of enchantment to your visit.
Cruise Ship Terminal
The cost of the trip will be CAN$35 and the 9-mile journey will take about 30 minutes. There are several cafes and restaurants within walking distance of the Vancouver cruise terminal including a Food Court on the lower level of the Waterfront Centre adjoining Canada Place. The Canada Line connects the Vancouver cruise port with Vancouver International Airport (YVR). The SkyTrain transports passengers from downtown Vancouver to the eastern suburbs.
Granville Island is more than its market, however, as it also offers breweries, theatre shows, and festivals. If you walk there from the cruise port (a walk that is very easy and scenic), you will have to take a short Aquabus across the inlet, which makes the trip that much more scenic. If there is nothing else you do while in town, I recommend grabbing a quick meal and taking some time to explore Granville; you won’t be disappointed. While it is small, Vancouver does have an airport outside of the city (the airport code is YVR).
Travel
Commercial Drive and Gastown are good all-rounders, offering a variety of excellent international restaurants. SkyTrain is the oldest and one of the longest automated driverless light rapid transit systems in the world. The Expo and Millennium SkyTrain Lines connect downtown Vancouver with the cities of Burnaby, New Westminster and Surrey. The Canada Line connects downtown Vancouver to the Vancouver International Airport (YVR) and the city of Richmond. With the addition of the new Evergreen Extension, the Millennium travels from Vancouver through Burnaby into Port Moody and Coquitlam.
Should you try to book a hotel within a few months of your cruise, you may be paying premium rates due to limited availability. I may be biased because I live in Vancouver, but the Vancouver sail away is by far one of the most picturesque beginnings of a cruise vacation. Having cruised from Vancouver to Hawaii and other locations six times, you need to savor the sail away on an upper deck. If you’re looking for a cheaper cruise, sail in May or September/October when there are fewer people sailing.
Vancouver Cruise Port Parking
The Vancouver cruise terminal is a busy place, especially in the summer months. It’s best to arrive early by at least two hours to allow plenty of time to check in and get through security. If you’re looking for the best Vancouver sightseeing tours, there are a few companies that offer short Vancouver city tours for cruise passengers.
For a budget-friendly stay, the Vancouver YMCA Hotel offers nice rooms at reasonable prices. It’s important to note that Vancouver is the most expensive city in Canada. Downtown hotels are as expensive as vacationing in Miami Beach or New York City. Signage clearly marks the route for cruise ship passengers, and there are plenty of people to assist you. The following map shows the directions from Canada Place to the Waterfront Station. However, you can follow it from the Skytrain station to the cruise port.
The port hosts almost every major cruise line, with different cruise lines operating at different times of the year depending on what kinds of cruises they offer. You can view the port’s cruise schedule if you want to see more about what ships are leaving and when. We ended up walking the whole of the city; literally – we walked ina square that started near the cruise terminal, went to Granville Island, backaround to Yaletown, then to Gastown and back to our hotel. You can just go into the convention centre entrance and 100 feet in on your right should be elevators and stairs to the cruise ship terminal level. Vancouver is serviced by over 20 cruise lines that depart for Alaska, Hawaii, ... Vancouver International Airport (YVR) is connected to the cruise terminal via Canada Line, and the ride takes 30 minutes. Both long-term and short-term parking (short-term parking is free for under 15 minutes) are available at Canada Place. While there are no restaurants or shops inside the Canada Place cruise terminal, you’ll find multiple dining and shopping options at the adjacent Waterfront Centre mall. There are also plenty of restaurants within a five-minute walk of the Vancouver cruise terminal. Gray Line Westcoast Sightseeing provides regular shuttle service from the airport to the cruise terminal of Vancouver at Canada Place.
Take the Skyride, North America’s largest aerial tramway, to the summit for alpine shopping, mountainside dining and ranger talks at the Refuge for Endangered Wildlife. Beer – Like any other city, there are multiple options for beer throughout Vancouver. While walking through the city, we found multiple locations to stop and have a beer. While I don’t know if I would recommend it if you’re in the area (the beer overall was kind of lacking), it’s a great demonstration of the variety of beers in the city.
This would have meant we would have needed to book multiple cars to get six people and their two pieces of luggage each to the cruise port. Elevators take you to the main public lobby of the cruise ship terminal. To drop off passengers or baggage, follow the traffic attendant's instructions to the designated baggage check drop-off area.
This is by far the least expensive and quickest way to get between the Canada Place Cruise Ship terminal and YVR Airport. The Cruise Ship terminal is a couple hundred feet from the Canada Line waterfront Skytrain Station. On this particular journey the cruise ship I was traveling with had an overnight stay in Vancouver, and the next morning was the last morning of the cruise and when guests were required to disembark. The Gastown neighborhood is named a popular resident of the area called “Gassy Jack.” He is known as one of the founders of the area, and you can visit a statue erected in his honor in Maple Tree Square. However, the most famous landmark in this area is the Gastown Steam Clock. One of the Asian food choices recommended to us a fewdifferent times by locals was a B.C.
Port's largest liner so far is NCL's Norwegian Bliss (capacity 4200 passengers). NCL Bliss departed from Vancouver (Oct 1, 5-day repositioning cruise) to Los Angeles via San Francisco. Port's 1 millionth cruise passenger mark was reached in 2002 (1, million).
